About cystitis treatment

If you’re experiencing cystitis, a three-day course of antibiotic treatment with nitrofurantoin can be an effective way to clear it up.

How does nitrofurantoin work?

Cystitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection irritating the bladder. As an antibiotic, nitrofurantoin works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection. Your symptoms should improve within two days of starting treatment.

How do I take it?

If we prescribe cystitis treatment, you would take one capsule twice a day for three days.

What are the side effects of nitrofurantoin?

It’s unusual to experience side effects with nitrofurantoin. It’s possible that you might feel sick or dizzy. If this happens to you, do not drive or operate heavy machinery.

This service is for women, 18-64 years only.

If you suffer from cystitis repeatedly you should see your GP to work out your best treatment option.

It’s important that you tell us which other medicines you’re taking – whether they’re prescription or medicines you’ve bought without a prescription. You must also tell us about any other medical conditions. We need to know so that we only prescribe nitrofurantoin if suitable for you.

What if I’m pregnant?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should not use this service. Please see your GP for a face-to-face appointment.

What are my options if I don’t take nitrofurantoin?

Cystitis may clear up without an antibiotic, within five days. But we advise you get treated after two days if your symptoms are unpleasant.

Other healthcare providers may prescribe a different antibiotic or therapy.
